The End of Oak Street - here are the essentials:
Dinosaurs. Feathers. Carl Sagan. 70’s awesomeness. Ewan McGregor. Epic soundtrack. Anne Hathaway. Dinosaurs.
But seriously this hands down has some of the best visual detail on dinosaurs.
The film follows the Platt family as an unexplained cosmic event swaps a suburban 70’s neighbourhood with that same space in prehistoric times. We follow their discovery, survival, and escape plan in this super fun wild ride.
But where does Carl Sagan fit into all this? He’s referenced in the movie… so for the uninitiated, stick with me on this side quest: Carl was an astronomer, writer and science communicator. He wrote about traversable wormholes in his book Contact, although his book is fiction, Carl consulted theoretical physicist Kip Thorne to find a plausible method of transport for his characters. In asking this question it prompted Kip and his students to revisit Einstein-Rosen Bridges and later come up with what we now know as the Thorn Solution.
Mathematically The End of Oak Street based its wormholes on Einstein-Rosen Bridges that are inherently random and unstable, making for a much more exciting film!
That side quest knowledge isn’t essential to enjoy the film, but I do think knowing it, ads a really great additional dimension to the experience.
This would be a wild video game concept. It’s a fantastic film that immerses you in the story, the emotional arc and is a solid gateway drug for curious minds to do further science reading!
PS… There’s also some dinosaur sexy time.
