Thailand on Bourke

Located on Bourke Street, with a rather unassuming frontage, is a wonderful relaxed gem - Thailand on Bourke. I wasn't sure what to expect here, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprized - its not your usual restaurant. The website is glitchy, the QR code menu is all over the place, but once you commit to the experience without expectation - it’s wonderful and freeing.
The wine shop has some great pricing for take away and dine in, the tap beers and cocktails are also very, very well priced, plus every staff member was warm, helpful, and effortlessly capable in their perfect state of flow.
Now to the hero of the experience. The food. Since Thailand on Bourke is located so close to a few theatres and venues, I thought it fitting to try the "Pre-Theatre Feast" for $49, or 2 for $90. This feast includes a wine cocktail, mixed starter tray, curry, rice and a dessert that, as I will soon discover, will have you rolling out the door.
The mixed starter plate was a delight offering a solid sample of goodies and sauces, and for mains I opted for the red duck curry and the prawn pad Thai, over ordering as usual.
The red duck curry was exploding with flavour and warmth without burning heat, beautifully balanced and generous with the duck.
As for the prawn pad Thai, 2 king prawns on a mountain of pad Thai fresh shoots, tofu, plenty of peanuts and an overwhelming energy of generosity and hospitality.
Before we get to dessert, I tried the "Wine Cocktail" that comes in many flavours, I wasn't expecting much, but after my third, its fair to say I quite enjoyed the ice cold, sweet, fun beverage in a giant wine glass.
I was quite worried I wouldn't have room for dessert, but out came a sticky rice heart and a flower of mango. The perfect way to finish.
This whole experience felt warm and authentic - I'll definitely be back.
